It happened at the worst possible time. (I'm fine now and long recovered) I had opened my practice up just a year and a half before. My young wife and I had only been married for two and a half years. We were walking on the sidewalk of Philadelphia with another relative of mine that evening who was visiting from out of state for a class reunion when a drunk driver, who had no insurance lost control of her vehicle causing it to jump the sidewalk and hit us. Unbelievable! Surreal.Like a nightmare. A young man who was a law student at the time (now an attorney) witnessed the entire event and called the police and fire rescue. At the time all I could remember was the roar of the car engie and then everything went dark. The witness told me that I had actually flipped up onto the hood and landed in the street. We made the news on KYW that evening and there was a small article about it in the Philadelphia Inquirer the next day. I could barely walk after discharge from the hospital. but made it home to our apartment somehow. The pain the next day was unbearable. I could not drive. It was a double whammy because my wife and I were both injured and essentially incapacitated. I could not work at a time when every case literally mattered for survival. I was a young lawyer on my own with no salary. My wife could not work. We had rent that would be due, bills to pay. No income. We could barely get around. The months that followed were harrowing and filled with doctor visits and physical therapy. My wife and I were fortunate that we were young at the time. After a couple of weeks I had no choice, (and on crutches) but to fight through the pain and try to work and not miss seeing new clients so eventually we could pay bills, etc. My wife unfortunately was left with a permanent injury to one body part.
