It happened at the worst possible time. (I'm fine now and long sincerecovered) I had opened my practice up just a year and a half before. My young wife and I had only been married for two and a half years. We were walking on the sidewalk with another relative of mine that evening who was visiting from out of state for a class reunion when a drunk driver, who had no insurance lost control of her vehicle causing it to jump the sidewalk and hit us. Unbelievable! Like a nightmare. A young man who was a law student at the time (now an attorney) witnessed the entire event and called the police and fire rescue. We made the news on KYW that evening and there was a small article about it in the newspaper the next day. I could barely walk after discharge from the hospital but we made it home to our apartment somehow. The pain the next day was unbearable. I could not drive. It was a double whammy because my wife and I were both injured and essentially incapacitated. I could not work at a time when every case literally mattered for survival. I was a young lawyer on my own with no salary. My wife could not work. We had rent that would be due, bills to pay. No income. We could barely get around. The months that followed were harrowing and filled with doctor visits and physical therapy. My wife and I were fortunate that we were young at the time as bad as it was.. it could have been far worse. After a couple of weeks I had no choice, (and on crutches) but to fight through the pain and try to work and not miss seeing new clients so eventually we could pay rent, bills, etc. My wife unfortunately was left with a permanent injury to one are of her body.
